History of the Nemes Csőgör family, an aristocratic Hungarian family

(Nemes = noble, aristocratic)

The ancestors of this ancient Hungarian family came to the territory of today's Hungary from nearby Transylvania. The first written mention of the Csőgör family dates back to 1270, when its members obtained extensive land and property from the then king István V. of Hungary. In the sixteenth century, they belonged to the most prominent families in Hungary and owned property in various parts of the country. To this day, some estates of the former owner are still accessible and can be visited. The original properties of the Csőgör family currently serve as the seat of banks, museums or cultural centres. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the family actively participated in political life and largely supported educational projects, especially in the field of agriculture. In addition to agricultural and forestry activities, it operated in the financial sphere. Its members participated in the creation of laws in the field of taxation and customs in the Hungarian Parliament.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, part of the family line belonged to the higher customs nobility.

The Nemes Csőgör family played an important role in the history of Hungary. During the Turkish wars, Zsuzsánna distinguished herself from the Csőgör family for her bravery in the defence of the territory and thus became the patroness and protector of the family.

Among the prominent personalities of the 16th century was Ferenc, a capable voivode, with whose help it was possible to pay off all the debts of Hungary at that time.

Gábor, who I know as one of the founders of modern Hungarian agriculture,

played a role in the politics of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

István Nemes Csőgör, a prominent statesman and long-time member of the Hungarian Parliament, left a significant mark in history.

Due to inaccurate transcription of the document by church dignitaries who served as registrars for centuries, the surname has been corrupted throughout history. The surnames Csőger, Csőkör, Csergeö, Tőkőra, Csőgörök and many other similar variants actually denote the same noble family. Professional literature states that the Csőgör variant began to appear as early as 1720.

Very often, the family was connected by marriage to other aristocrats of the time, such as the famous aristocratic Podmaniczky family. One of the last connections took place at the beginning of the twentieth century with the Nemes Simon family.

In Hungarian archives, royal books, museums, registries and professional literature, there is an immense amount of documents and records about the noble origin and life of the Nemes Csőgör family.

Where are they now ?

After the turbulent events of 1945, part of the family resettled in Czechoslovakia.

In Czechoslovakia, István Nemes Csőgör founded a family from which, in addition to three daughters, the youngest son Jaromír, who has an only son, David, was born. Jaromír Nemes Csőgör and his family currently live in Great Britain.

In 2021, with the help of historical documents, Jaromír Nemes Csőgör again proved and confirmed his legitimate noble origin before the International Genealogical Commission. In the same year, he adopted a new coat of arms for his family, which depicts historical facts and the current situation of the family. In the fall of 2022, Jaromir Nemes Csőgör, his wife Helena, and son David were reinstated in a ceremony.

With this act, Jaromír Nemes Csőgör revived history and continued the traditions of his ancestors and their work in the field of finance by issuing his own silver and gold coins, on which Zsuzsánna - Guardian of the family and family coat of arms is depicted.
